This was one of my first attempts to use Photoshop. I decided to create a textile using inspiration from my own cultural heritage. Norwegian, Swedish, German and Irish patterns combine to make a pattern that varies in color and detail but as a whole creates a balanced work.
Because I was just starting out in using Photoshop this was not a particularly difficult textile to create. In the future I will work on creating another heritage textile with similar elements that will most importantly force me to improve and continue developing the original design.

Personal Statement
In case the title wasn't obvious my name is Devon and I am currently a student at Washington State University where I am studying interior design. I first became interested in the subject as a kid playing computer games....seriously. Me and my mom used to spend hours playing the Sims, downloading furniture online and building homes and since then it has been a fascinating and enjoyable activity. To me design is too complex to really define. It can be accidental, simple, and it usually is open to personal opinion. My inspiration comes from history and the cultures of Europe, the Middle East and India. I am also intrigued by modern designs that are simple but have special details or defining characteristcs. My ideas of design are always changing and the things that inspire me as I learn and observe are endless. I am excited to see where they take me and being open-minded will only help me throughout the entire process.

- One of my biggest interests and inspirations is architecture. The mosques of the Islam world emulate the idea of nonrepresentational designs. Cathedrals of Europe are tall, dark and beautiful. Hindu and Buddhist temples move from simplicity to astonishing decoration. Classic Roman features of the column and arch are still imitated in buildigns everywhere. Architecture is the shell of the interior and if the outside does not resemble the inside (and vice versa) then to me a designer has failed. Some of my other interests include geology because I believe in the inspiration of rocks and minerals in relation to design. Jewelry today is the result of geology and design. I am also truly inspired by ancient armor and weaponry. These have changed so constantly over the centuries and are varied from tribe to empire.
